People’s Rights Figure

In early June, People’s Rights of Washington listed Casey Whalen as an official assistant for Area 8 in eastern Washington.[1] As of mid-August, Whalen was the sole individual listed as a “Team Member” on the “About” section of the People’s Rights public Facebook page. Whalen’s name was later removed.[2]

Casey Whalen plays an outsized role in promoting People’s Rights through his North Idaho Exposed YouTube outlet which boasts more than 14,000 subscribers – through which he serves as a regular videographer of the group’s events.[3] Whalen has also promoted People’s Rights, his videos, and other far-right causes at the website InlandNWReport.com.[4]

Casey Whalen promotes the Agenda 21 conspiracy as espoused by movement figures such as Tom DeWeese of the American Policy Center.[5] Whalen’s InlandNWReport articles frequently promote People’s Rights alongside the call to “Join our local group fighting AGENDA 21 in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.”[6]

Whalen also promoted a John Birch Society video of Trevor Louden titled ‘COVID-19: Tool of Red China and the Socio-Globalist Left’ and produced a video interview of Louden on the conspiratorial topic of Cultural Marxism – or the idea that movements ranging from environmental and feminist to anti-racist are part of a communist plot.[7] Elsewhere, Loudon has spun an anti-Muslim conspiracy theory in which “far left and Islamist agendas” lay behind a range of liberal public policies.

In June, North Idaho Exposed hosted a “Liberate America” conference in Kootenai County Fairgrounds. An InlandNWReport article promoting both People’s Rights and the event announced the speakers as including Ammon Bundy, Christian nationalist, and anti-Muslim militia advocate Matt Shea, Agenda 21 conspiracy theorist Tom DeWeese, Patriot Prayer leader Joey Gibson, anti-Muslim bigot Jack Robertson (aka John Jacob Schmidt) of Radio Free Redoubt, and Greg Pruett of the Idaho Second Amendment Alliance.[8]

Whalen thanked the North Idaho Light Foot Recruitment and North Idaho Militia for providing security at the event.[9]

Whalen has used his InlandNWReport writing to promote the conspiracy-mongering John Birch Society and its New American magazine, and the Liberty State effort to secede Eastern Washington.[10] Whalen has also used Facebook to promote videos of Patriot Prayer leader Joey Gibson, an interview with Eric Parker of the Idaho 3%, and statements from Larry Pratt’s Gun Owners of America, the John Birch Society, and the effort to “Free Schaeffer Cox.”[11] And Whalen has used his site and Facebook to defend and promote Matt Shea.[12]

Befitting such ideas and alliances, Whalen is an ardent opponent of COVID-19 related restrictions. He has absurdly compared contact tracing to communism, promoted a “mask burning” event outside the Panhandle Health District, and engaged in numerous other related activities. [13] Whalen also promoted a September “COVID-19 84 PLANEMIC UNMASKED” sponsored by the John Birch Society and featuring Matt Shea.[14]

Whalen was arrested in late August just before an “Open Carry if You Care” event he had organized in Coeur d’Alene. The arrest was unrelated to the event, coming in connection to a misdemeanor warrant for falsifying, mutilating, or concealing public records.[15] According to Greg Pruett of the Idaho Second Amendment Alliance, the charges stemmed from Whalen’s previous removal of signs posted by the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department at a Hayden, Idaho beach warning that those arriving in Idaho from out of state were required to self-quarantine for 14 days.[16]

Among other things, Whalen has advocated that the federal government should “PUT THE MILITARY ON THE BORDER TO PROTECT THE COUNTRY” and “Charge all governors and mayors who created a sanctuary city/state” with criminal violations.[17] And, Whalen has written in a bigoted and conspiratorial fashion that “The LGBTQ movement is a serious mental illness problem that needs to be confronted…How many of you remember growing up with trans kids??? Short answer, you didn’t. This is part of the cultural Marxists move to destroy our country & the family unit…This is all a move ot (sic) usher in the New World Order & remove sovereignty from our country.”[18]
