Idaho People’s Rights has six Facebook groups, including a statewide group with 1,314 members, Area 1 with 796 members, Area 3 with 243, Area 4 with 190, Area 5 with 46, and Area 8 with 83 members.[1]
People’s Rights has an active Idaho chapter, in large part a product of Ammon Bundy’s leadership. In addition to holding regular meetings in Emmet, Idaho, Bundy-led activism has repeatedly displayed the groups’ disregard for community health, bullying tactics, and penchant for always potentially violent behavior. On April 2, Ammon Bundy held a germinal meeting of what would become People’s Rights as well as help spur growing opposition to COVID-19-related restrictions.[2] Bundy continued to mobilize around such issues, leading a protest outside of the home of a police officer who had arrested a leading Idaho anti-vaxxer after she had refused to leave a playground closed due to COVID-19.[3]
In July, Bundy and company’s behavior forced the cancellation of a Southwest District Health meeting in Caldwell aimed at discussing a possible COVID-19-related mask order. The Bundy-led group defied a mask requirement at the meeting, eventually leading to an incident in which Bundy was videoed shoving a district employee.[4] Also in July, the group held a “People’s Rights Parade” in Coeur d’Alene.[5]
On August 1, the group held an event in Nezperce, Idaho to support Area 2 assistant Sean Anderson after he was injured in a shootout with police in July.[6] Later in the month, Bundy was arrested twice for refusing to leave an area of the Idaho Statehouse to protest community health measures, eventually being trespassed from the building for one year.[7]
In addition to these activities, in August People’s Rights Idaho Area 1 hosted a “self-defense” and “Emergency Mental Preparedness event in Athol and a “Rally Against The Mask” in Coeur d’Alene.[8] In September the group hosted an herbal medicine class.[9]
On October 1 Ammon Bundy and others appeared at a high school football game in Caldwell, Idaho on October 1, causing the game to be canceled after they refused to wear masks or watch the game from a park and “a threat to the safety of the school was made” according to a school district spokesperson.[10]
People’s Rights is scheduled to host an October 10 “We the People” event in Nampa, Idaho at Ammon Bundy is slated to speak alongside far-right “constitutionalist” Krisanne Hall, California People’s Rights leader Tony Pellegrino and others.[11]
