Over the weekend when most Americans celebrate the founding of the United States, some activists have decided to show support for the flag of those who sought to split this country apart to defend the institution of slavery. As of the morning of July 3, the Institute for Research and Education on Human Rights (IREHR) has documented plans for at least 46 pro-Confederate flag rallies, 40 of them set to take place over the holiday weekend (see map and chart below).

Largely spread through word-of-mouth and social media, the so-called #StandByTheFlag events this weekend are scheduled in Walmart parking lots (to protest Walmart’s decision to stop selling the flag), at Confederate monuments, and other locations across the country. Other angry flag supporters are organizing “rolling rallies” with convoys of pickup trucks flying the Confederate battle flag driving through different communities.

RollingRallies

Pro-Confederate “Rolling Rallies” like the one pictured above are popping up.

These events are likely to be relatively small, but they provide an opportunity for pro-Confederate activists to network and for the situation to escalate.

It also provides a pool of potential new recruits for white nationalists. Brad Griffin, who writes under the nom de guerre “Hunter Wallace” for his white nationalist website, Occidental Dissent, has been urging white nationalists to attend these events. “Show up and SHOVE BACK!” he wrote.

IREHR we continue to monitor these events closely. If come across additional events, please let us know. We will update the list throughout the weekend. If you have reports from your community, we would like to hear from you.
